Killing Time Before the Show The Photography of Jon Rendell
I was in two minds whether or not to endure the crowds and traffic mayhem that was the Golden Gate Bridge's seventy-fifth birthday celebrations a few Sundays ago. I had figured that the ocean side of the bridge would be a less chaotic place to plant myself while I waited for the fireworks to being at 9:30 pm. At 8 pm I arrived at China Beach—a hidden treasure nestled within the exclusive San Francisco neighborhood of Sea Cliff. Robin Williams lives there. Legend has it that local residents named China Beach for the Chinese fishermen who, long ago, anchored their junks in the cove and camped on the beach.
The sun had still not set and it was ninety minutes before the fireworks were to begin, so I pointed my lens out to sea and began making the most of the waning light. It wasn't until I returned home that I found that these shots were just as compelling as the subsequent pyrotechnic display. Here are those photographs.
