TO GO

Living in a city on the Great Plains when the year of Orwell's dystopia came around, the author found nothing ominous about 1984 in Fargo. Rather, the town seemed to be dying of its pettiness. This is about a whole family that becomes bipolar — they all get alternately manic and depressed as one. An outside member, a young Marine back from Lebanon on leave, tries to fit in, but they tear his good nature to shreds. He comes out intact anyway.
